The temperature is mild and there can be mud on some trails and traces of snow on high peaks. Yellow and violet colors predominate because of the flowering of brooms and lupines. These months are ideal for exploring new routes and for multi-day cycling trips with organized lodgings.

In summer (January – March) it rains very little. January is hot and the ground is dry. Summer is the best time of the year for biketouring with camping gear. It is also the best time of the year to hire a guided tour by the road of the 7 lakes. There is a lot of tourism at this point, so it is convenient to book lodgings and excursions in advance.

Autumn (April – May) is the best season for enduro and downhill fans. The ground within the woods becomes moist, which provides very good traction. The air is usually fresh and dust free. There is not much tourism, therefore the bike routes and circuits are decongested.

In winter (June – September) it is possible to ride a bike, but only wearing very technical sports clothing. You should plan short rides and choose sunny and windless days. You should avoid elevated areas, since the snow usually acumulates in some sectors.[/vc_toggle][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”2″ accent_color=”#f0d1ac”][vc_toggle title=”How should i prepare and/or equip myself for a bike ride?” custom_font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%231a1c18″ custom_use_theme_fonts=”yes” use_custom_heading=”true”]The first thing you should do is look at the weather forecast and make sure your bike is in good condition. You must wear clothing according to the time of year. Gloves and windbreaker are essential. Always wear a helmet, and if you are going to practice downhill or enduro, the full face helmet is the best option. Don’t forget to bring a tool kit, patches, pump, and a bike light. If you carry a backpack, make sure it is small, comfortable and has body adjustment straps.

If you are going on a multi-day trip you should equip your bike with panniers and take camping equipment. You must study the route, analyze the altimetry and define the stops and breaks of each stage. You have to organize the logistics and decide if it is better to bring your own bike or rent a bike to make the trip.

It is also advisable to bring your cell phone with maps of the area and the route loaded on the phone or on a GPS.

You should bring nutritious food with high calories and low weight. Bariloche has plenty of fresh water available all year round, except in summer when the streams tend to dry up. Carry at least 1 liter of water per person when you go on an excursion. It consists of traveling by bicycle visiting places carrying luggage inside rear or front panniers. It is the preferred modality for most people given its versatility and storage capacity.

Bikepacking is the most extreme version of cycle touring; little luggage, shorter and more complex gravel routes or trails of considerable technical difficulty. The luggage is reduced to the handlebar area (tent and sleeping bag), the bicycle frame (tools and food) and the large under-seat bag (clothing).

The difference in a practical sense is that bikepacking gives us greater freedom when choosing routes. The load is much smaller and the absence of a luggage rack and large saddlebags on the sides allows us to pedal on narrow paths and more difficult routes. The disadvantage is that you must be minimalistic when choosing what to wear. The cargo volume is very limited. Another disadvantage is that the loading/unloading procedure is complicated. For these reasons I recommend the “bikepacking” modality only for experienced bike travelers.

The touring trailer performs very well on asphalt, and has great loading capacity. It is very easy to load and unload, and does not affect the balance of the bike.

It is possible to combine different cargo modalities, for example, rear panniers + front bikepacking harness. This is recommended for long routes with high % of gravel road. In this way we do not overload the rear luggage rack and avoid breakages, without sacrificing load capacity.

This combination can be convenient on long routes with a high percentage of gravel such as the Circuito Grande , Carretera Austral , Desafío Vuelta de los Guanacos o Patagonia Beer trail.

[/vc_toggle][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”2″ accent_color=”#f0d1ac”][vc_toggle title=”Do I sleep in a tent or do I sleep in lodgings?” custom_font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%231a1c18″ custom_use_theme_fonts=”yes” use_custom_heading=”true”]

This is the first question that comes to mind when we decide to go on a bike trip. Below we will list the advantages and disadvantages of each modality. We will also provide you with a list of contacts that will be very useful if you need to plan your stops.

SLEEP IN A TENT

Advantages

It is the cheapest lodging. Campsites are paid per person, on the other hand, cabins and dorms must be payed
entirety and usually have 4 or more beds that you will have to pay for, even if you do not use them. Therefore if you travel alone or in two it is very convenient to sleep in a tent. There are even some free camping or wild
camping areas where you can sleep without spending a penny.

You will experience the true essence of biketouring. Carrying your tent will give you freedom, flexibility and
autonomy, benefits that you will not have if you stay in cabins. You can also change plans on the fly, without
losing reservations or accommodations you already paid for.

Sleeping meters from a lake on a sandy beach, or under the stars can only be experienced in a campsite with a
tent. The best spots inside the campsites are reserved for tents, and campsites with privileged locations usually don’t have cabins.

Natural áreas and national parks have more campsites tan cabins. Taking a tent will give you flexibility when
organizing the trip. In addition, campsites always have room for a tent, and it is not necessary to make
reservations. Cabins are usually full in high season.

If things get complicated and you cannot reach your destination for that day, you can set up your tent and rest. No problem. You have everything you need to get through that moment. The tent is like a life insurance on a bicycle trip.

Disadvantages

You will carry more weight on the bicycle (2kg of tent and 1kg of sleeping bag and insulation)
– Sleeping on the floor witha a mat can be uncomfortable for many people, especially if you have to do it for 4 or 5 days in a row.

Persistent rains at night or strong winds can complicate you a lot. It is essential to check the forecast before
departure. We recommend the tent if you are going to travel in December, January or February, which are the
driest and hottest months.

SLEEP IN CABINS, DORMS OR DOMES

Advantages

Clearly the comfort of a bed is something that many seek, especially after making a lot of physical effort during the day.

Some cabins may have fire stoves and are generally warmer than a tent.

You carry less weight on the bike

If you travel with a group of 4-5 people, the cost per person of a cabin is not that high. In this case, it might be
convenient to choose this option.

During cold or rainy months, having a roof at the end of the day is convenient to recover temperature and dry
equipment and clothing. These months are usually during early spring and late fall. In summer the weather is
dry and hot. We recommend hiring lodgings in October, November or April.

Disadvantages

It is necessary to book in advance and plan your trip well, calculating the daily distances of pedaling to meet
the schedule.

The cabins are expensive, they do not usually have a lake shoreline, nor are they usually located in such
privileged places as the campsites. Some lodgings do not take reservations for a single night.

There are fewer options and it is hard to find a place during high season (January and February) It is difficult to get the phone numbers and location of these cabins. That being said, here is a list of valuable
contacts for hostels, dorms, cabins and domes throughout the region, to make your accommodation search easier.

See here the list of lodgings, domes, dormis and cabins from San Martin to Esquel

[/vc_toggle][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”2″ accent_color=”#f0d1ac”][vc_toggle title=”Self guided or guided tour? You can sleep in a tent or in lodgings. If you are going to ride a desolate route, it is advisable to take food, camping gear and cooking items on the bike.

Flexibility and cost
You have flexibility to choose the departure date, route, and days of duration. You can organize the stages as you like. It is cheaper than a guided tour, since you don’t have to pay for a support vehicle or guide. Selfguided trips are more demanding and solitary.

Activities
If you are traveling alone, we can recommend additional stops, tours and activities that you can do on your trip. You can start pedaling from the center of Bariloche, go around the circuit and pedal back to the city. This route is approximately 64 kilometers long and visits the main natural and tourist attractions in the area. Another touristic route that can be done in one day is the Circuito Catedral and lake Gutiérrez. The length of the route is 40 kilometers and it takes about 5 hours to complete, starting from the center of Bariloche.

The road of the 7 lakes is located North of Bariloche and it is one of the most beautiful sections of the national Route 40. It is also possible to start the biketour in Villa la Angostura and end up in San Martin de los Andes. In that case, the distance is 120 kilometers. There are 3 possibilities to go by bike from Bariloche to San Martin. These routes are 7 lakes by Myrtles forest, 7 lakes by Traful or 7 lakes classic.

If you pedal South of Bariloche, you will find Lake Gutiérrez and Lake Mascardi. Then pass along the Hotel Llao Llao, later on through Bahía López and finally arrive to the panoramic viewpoint of lake Moreno. A good alternative to return to the center without repeating the route is to do it through Colonia Suiza, and pedal along the gravel road that borders Lake Moreno. This route has a total of 64 kilometers. If you plan to start from the city center, you should know that the tour is long and it is necessary to be in good shape to complete it. If you are not sure, you can rent an electric bike and you will have no problem completing the tour. If you like panoramic excursions, this ride is for you.

[/vc_toggle][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”2″ accent_color=”#f0d1ac”][vc_toggle title=”Is it possible to visit Colonia Suiza by bicycle?” custom_font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%231a1c18″ custom_use_theme_fonts=”yes” use_custom_heading=”true”]Yes, of course. Visiting Colonia Suiza (Swiss Colony) is a must if you come to Bariloche. You can reach Colonia Suiza by bus, car or bicycle. During high season, buses are always full, and the frequency is not good. You can waste more than an hour waiting at the bus stop. If you go by car, you will have to park far away from town, and the traffic during summer is awful.

If you want to exercise and enjoy the day, we recommend you rent a bike in the center of Bariloche and pedal to Colonia Suiza. Once you get there, you can taste delicious “curanto” for lunch, and enjoy a tasty craft beer. Later, you can return when you decide, without depending on the bus. The total distance is about 45 kilometers.[/vc_toggle][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”2″ accent_color=”#f0d1ac”][vc_toggle title=”Which are the best bike routes in Dina Huapi?” custom_font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%231a1c18″ custom_use_theme_fonts=”yes” use_custom_heading=”true”]

The town of Dina Huapi is located 18 km east of Bariloche. It has a steppe climate, much drier and hotter than the Andean zone. It is best to cycle there during fall, when the air is cool and there’s more humidity.

There is a rural road that borders the Limay river for 20 kilometers and ends in Villa Llanquín. It is possible to do it back and forth in the day. Dina Huapi also has very nice bike lanes, ideal for riding with children.

It is also possible to cycle from Bariloche to Dina Huapi in the day by bike lanes and gravel roads. This route is called Camino del Este and has a total of 40 km. The tourist attractions of this town are the Ñirihuau river, the Limay river, the Leones hill, the Villegas hill and the beach with wide views of the Andes mountains.

[/vc_toggle][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”2″ accent_color=”#f0d1ac”][vc_toggle title=”Which are the best bike singletracks for enduro, trail and downhill in bariloche?” custom_font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%231a1c18″ custom_use_theme_fonts=”yes” use_custom_heading=”true”]

The main Mountain Bike trails in Bariloche are found in the mountains that surround the city. To visualize these circuits, we recommend downloading trailforks application on your cell phone.

Cerro Catedral has several international level trails, ideal for descending with a full suspension, enduro or DH bike. The best known are the Open Shimano circuit, the DH IXS circuit, the Pista 6 trail and the Mario. To get to the start of these trails, you must pedal or push your bike along the maintenance paths of the ski station. The chair lifts of Catedral do not allow the ascent with bicycles. If you don’t feel like climbing Cerro Catedral, don’t worry. There are trails that start at the base of the ski station. The most popular and accessible in Bariloche is the Paco Etchegaray trail that ends on the shore of Lake Gutiérrez. There is also the Chapelquito trail, that begins at the Condor 1 ski slope and ends near the Bariloche motocross circuit.

Cerro San Martin is located between Cerro Catedral and Lake Gutiérrez. It is a smaller hill, with an ascent gravel road for bikes on its southern slope. From the top of Cerro San Martin you can descend through 4 variants, all of high difficulty. These singletracks are called El Bravo, Nido de Cóndores, Chimanguito and Zacalapata, this last trail in addition to being very entertaining, is linked to the Paco Etchagaray trail, better known as “la paco”. Currently, El Bravo is the most popular and most technical of these 4.

Otto hill also offers a variety of trails with considerable difficulty. You can ascend by bike or by car along the gravel road located at km 1 of Los Pioneros avenue, in front of the YPF del faldeo gas station. You must ascend to “Piedras Blancas” complex. From there you can go down by La Tanga singletrack, and further down connect with El Bhuo, La Piedra or Kittu. All these trails are designed for DH, and have some jumps, sharp turns, and quite a slope. Finally, there is a trail known as La Picada del 7. To access this circuit, you must ascend to the top restaurant of the mountain known as confiteria giratoria, either by vehicle or by bike. There begins a bike path that takes us to the beginning of the singletrack. Picada del 7 is very fast, has impressive views, and ends at km 8 of Avenida de los Pioneros.

Cerro Goye and Cerro Bellavista. These two mountains of 1,600 and 1,800 meters respectively, are located next to the historic town of Colonia Suiza, 25 km from the center of Bariloche. You must go there by vehicle. To ascend these 2 hills, you must find the access trekking path to the Laguna Negra shelter. The first section is wide and shared with pedestrians. After ascending for 2 kilometers, you will find the detour on the left. The climb is long and quite steep. You may be able to cycle some sections, but most must be done bike-pushing. If you have an Enduro E-bike you can pedal up almost the entire trail. When you reach the upper third, you can choose the trail that leads to Cerro Bellavista or Cerro Goye. Both circuits are spectacular, although Goye is usually better maintained. Once you reach the summit, you must descend along the same ascent path. The lower section can be done by an exclusive trail for bikes.

Cerro Carbón is located to the east of Bariloche. You can climb to the summit by the southern slope. You can access the climb by the gravel road that leads to Neumeyer shelter. The ascent is through an exclusive path for pedestrians, bikes or horses. It is not possible to reach the summit of Cerro Carbón with a vehicle. The descent trail is on the opposite hillside (North slope). There are several options available to descend. Attention with motorcycles. This hill is the favorite of enduro motorcyclists. The downhill is very fast, and it is worth doing if you are a lover of enduro MTB or downhill. Due to the characteristics of this mountain, we recommend doing this circuit with moist soil, after a rainy day.

In the Manso River Valley, you will find “Las pasarelas MTB trail”. It is an intermediate difficulty trail, located 70 kilometers south of downtown Bariloche. It is possible to ride it with a trail or XC bicycle and is suitable for riders of all levels. The circuit has little unevenness, it is exclusive for bicycles and e-bikes (motorbikes are not allowed), and there are usually no pedestrians throughout its route. It has a total length of 22 kilometers and can be made in both directions, although it is usual to ride it from east to west.

In the town of Villa Llanquín, 40 km east of Bariloche, there is a rural circuit known as Vuelta del Arroyo Chacay or Vuelta del Cavernícola. It is ideal for touring on an XC bicycle with front suspension, or it can also be done on a full-suspension trail bike. The circuit is 44 kilometers long. It is of low technical difficulty and high physical demand. The route begins with an uninterrupted climb of 8 kilometers. Once you complete the climb, the route descends gradually until it reaches the Chacay stream. Then it borders the Limay River and ends at the starting point. You must bring water, food and a repair kit, since there are no supply points along the entire route and no cell phone signal.

[/vc_toggle][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”2″ accent_color=”#f0d1ac”][vc_toggle title=”Is it possible to ascend to the summit of Cerro Catedral by chairlift with a bicycle?” custom_font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%231a1c18″ custom_use_theme_fonts=”yes” use_custom_heading=”true”]

Cerro Catedral does not allow cyclists to use the chairlifts and/or gondolas. However, it offers a variety of world class single tracks for mountain biking. It is a steep mountain, which is why it´s recommended for experienced pilots. Enduro or downhill bikes are perfect to enjoy this mountain. It has 2 DH circuits, the Open Shimano and the IXS Downhill. To access these single tracks you must pedal up or push the bike along the maintenance paths of the ski station.

[/vc_toggle][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”2″ accent_color=”#f0d1ac”][vc_toggle title=”I want to ride the gutierrez lake mountain bike singletrack known as “la paco”. The circuit is about 7 kilometers long. The first half is not very steep. In any case, it is very fast, it has tight corners and some jumps. The second half is more technical and steep.

The trail is usually in good condition as it is regularly mantained by local cyclists. The difficulty level is medium the first half, and high at the end. It can be done with a hardtail, but it´s more enjoyable with a full suspension bike. There are two ways to get to the starting point. It can be accessed by bike or by vehicle. One of the access roads is the asphalt road that goes up to Cerro Catedral, and the other is a gravel road known as “Balcón del Gutiérrez”, that ascends from Villa los Coihues to Cerro Catedral. If, for example, you have to take a plane or a bus to get to the starting point, it may be better to rent a bicycle. Taking a bicycle by plane is expensive, and it must be securely packed. There is always a risk of loss or breakage. You must also transport the bike from the airport to your hotel. These transfers are expensive, risky and require a lot of effort.

Another point to keep in mind is how long you will be pedaling. If you are going to make a short trip, of 15 days or less, it is undoubtedly better to rent. In this way you can travel light to the starting point, gaining comfort and peace of mind on your trip.

If your plan is to make a very long trip, say more than 30 days, it could be cheaper to do it with your own bike, and all the logistics and effort to move the equipment will be worth it.[/vc_toggle][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”2″ accent_color=”#f0d1ac”][vc_toggle title=”Is it possible to rent a bike for cycle touring the road of the 7 seven lakes?” custom_font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%231a1c18″ custom_use_theme_fonts=”yes” use_custom_heading=”true”]

Yes, of course.
