WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BIKEPARK AT MOUNT CATEDRAL?

Year 2000.
The rise of downhill cycling in Bariloche

Beginning in 2000, downhill cycling grew in Bariloche. Starting in 2008, Bariloche hosted the Shimano Latam Championships continuously until 2021.

During those years, Mount Cathedral bikepark was operational via chairlifts and gondolas. Little by little, the bike park took hold. The downside was that the trails were hard and didn’t offer any beginner-friendly routes. The truth is, the project never fully took off.

Year 2021.
The bad news: Chairlifts closed for bikes.

Starting in 2021, Catedral Alta Patagonia’s interest in maintaining the bike park and the competitions waned. The following year, in 2021, the downhill and enduro cycling competitions moved to the neighboring Cerro Bayo in Villa la Angostura, and so the long-awaited dream of a bike park on Mount Catedral disappeared.

Year 2022.
The good news: Existing mountain bike trails are improved.

Over the years, enduro MTB and downhill MTB took hold in Bariloche and throughout the Andes. When the bike park closed, local trail builders and riders began a daunting task.

Existing trails were upgraded, new lines were opened. Bridges, jumps, cambers, and signage were added. After each winter, all the bike trails are cleared and enhanced.

THE ROLE OF E-BIKES IN ENDURO AND DOWNHILL CYCLING

How we went from pushing the bike to pedaling up

Before e-bikes, climbing a mountain was a tiring task.

A lot of time and energy was spent pedaling or pushing the bike to make one or maybe two descents a day. Gondolas, lifts, or vehicles where used to climb a hill in less time. Fortunately, electric bikes came along to solve those problems.
