This map shows the three variants of the 7 Lakes road, starting in Bariloche and ending in San Martin de los Andes. The 7 Lakes route through Arrayanes (myrtles forest) must be traveled from south to north for logistical and gradient reasons. The 7 Lakes route through Traful and the 7 Lakes Classic can be done in either direction. The estimated duration of these routes is 4 to 5 days. If you prefer shorter 2-day trips, you can start in Villa la Angostura and end in San Martin de los Andes, or vice versa.
This map shows all the cycling routes between Bariloche and San Martín de los Andes, including the three variants of the 7 Lakes road. To the east is the Paso Córdoba Trail, and right in the center of the map is Provincial Route 65, which crosses Villa Traful and connects the confluence area with the 7 lakes. These five cycling routes are the most popular in Patagonia due to their natural wonders, accessibility, and variety of campsites and accommodations. These cycling routes are designed to be completed in a period of 4 to 7 days.
This bike route map shows the classic bicycle touring routes south of Bariloche. The main artery running north to south is Route 40. We can see some alternative routes branching off Route 40, such as Provincial Route 71 through Los Alerces National Park and Provincial Route 83 through the Manso River Valley. These roads allow us to get off the paved road and explore the mountain range or the steppe in depth. To the east, in the steppe area, we can see a section of the “Patagonia Beer Trail” that connects the towns of Dina Huapi and Maitén. Another very nice gravel road for cycling is the one that takes us to Mount Tronador, located southwest of Bariloche.
This collection of mountain bike routes brings together all the circuits in the eastern zone, known as the Patagonian steppe. The steppe is the predominant climatic and geographical zone of Argentine Patagonia. Rainfall is scarce and the winds are strong, so cycling in these areas requires certain precautions and planning. The queen of the steppe routes is called the “Patagonia BeerTrail,” or the beer trail, and runs from San Martín de los Andes to El Bolsón, passing through the three most important beer-producing centers in the region. East of Bariloche, we find shorter circuits, such as the Chacay Loop or the rural road to Cerro Buitreras. If you’re looking for technical circuits, the ascent (and descent) of Cerro Carbon is ideal for DH and enduro MTB enthusiasts.
The most famous bicycle touring route in South America is the Chilean Carretera Austral. You can start this tour in the city of Bariloche, Argentina, then cross the Andes and travel south to finish in the town of O’Higgins, Chile. If you want to add a little more action to this route, you can cross from O’Higgins (CH) to El Chalten (ARG) via the Candelario Mansilla International Pass, crossing the desert lake. An epic journey, without a doubt! We complete this collection with the Carretera Austral North and the Volcanoes Route, which runs through one of the most picturesque areas of Chile and crosses the Andes Mountains twice.
Bariloche is a very large city. The distance from Llao Llao in the west and Dina Huapi in the east is almost 60 kilometers. To the west, we can visit the famous Circuito Chico and Lakes Moreno Grande and Moreno Chico. Another area frequented by cyclists is Cerro Catedral and Lake Gutiérrez to the south. To the east, we can pedal to the Limay River following a network of secondary roads and bike paths. If you prefer less-traveled routes, the Arroyo Bernal loop is a beautiful rural road great for cycling. It is also possible to ascend Mount Otto and visit the Habsburg viewpoint, with wonderful views of Lake Gutiérrez. All of these routes are of low or medium technical difficulty. If you prefer circuits for advanced and expert riders, take a look at the next three maps.
Cerro Otto is located less than a kilometer from downtown Bariloche and is one of the area’s most iconic mountains. Access is easy, as you can climb a gravel road to the summit. These characteristics make it the ideal place for XC, enduro, and DH mountain bike enthusiasts. It offers a variety of trails of varying difficulty, suitable for intermediate, advanced, and expert riders. It is divided into three zones: trails in the Curva Bariloche zone on the east ledge; trails near the Piedra de Habsburg on the south face; and two spectacular descents on the northwest ledge known as Picada del 7 and Chapita.
The cerro San Martin is a small mountain, 1,200 meters high, located opposite the northern slope of the well-known Cerro Catedral, which is 2,100 meters high. These two mountains offer a privileged location for mountain biking. The variety of trals is remarkable. Almost all of the routes are for advanced or expert riders. Some of these MTB circuits have hosted national and international DH championships, such as the Shimano Open, the IXS Downhill Cup, and the Enduro World Championship. Bariloche’s most famous trail, known as La Paco, begins at the base of Catedral Hill. Newer circuits such as Bravo and Chimanguito are frequented by local riders between the months of October and April, when weather conditions allow this sport.
Western Bariloche is one of the most wonderful areas for mountain biking. At the foot of the historic town of Colonia Suiza are the 1,700-meter Cerro Goye and the 1,800-meter Cerro Bellavista. These two mountains have mountain bike trails that will take you to another level. You can pedal to the summit with an e-bike. If you want to climb on a conventional bike, be ready to push the bike. Both hills are connected by a ridge, and you can descend along the same ascent path or via exclusive bicycle trails. We recommend an enduro or full-suspension trail bike to enjoy these trails. The view from the summit will take your breath away!
We offer guided and self-guided bike tours for all levels.
Multi-day bike tours are suitable for adventurous riders who love the outdoors and travel. The 7 Lakes Route is one of Argentina’s most famous bike tours. The trip to El Bolsón through the Manso Valley combines trails, gravel, paved roads, and two incredible rafting sections. Minimal preparation is required for these trips.
Guided e-bike tours are ideal for family or friends who want to explore Bariloche while combining sport and nature. There are bike courses for beginners and intermediate riders.
Finally, trail and enduro e-bike tours are designed for more experienced cyclists, adrenaline seekers, and mountain bike enthusiasts.
